  • Description

TURKISH PRIME MINISTER SULEYMAN DEMIREL'S JUSTICE PARTY LATE TODAY CLAIMED VICTORY IN THE COUNTRY'S GENERAL ELECTION. THROUGHOUT THE DAY, TURKS HAD VOTED IN THE ELECTION WHICH WAS MARRED BY VIOLENCE IN WHICH THREE PEOPLE WERE REPORTED KILLED AND EIGHT INJURED IN ISOLATED AREAS.

MR DEMIREL WAS EXPECTED TO BE RETURNED TO POWER FOR A FURTHER FOUR-YEAR TERM, ALTHOUGH WITH A DECREASED MAJORITY.

THE OFFICIAL RESULT TO POLLING WILL NOT BE ANNOUNCED FOR THREE DAYS, BUT THE JUSTICE PARTY MADE ITS CLAIM OF VICTORY AFTER UNOFFICIAL RETURNS SHOWED THEM HEADING FOR AN ABSOLUTE MAJORITY WHILE POLLING A REDUCED VOTE.

MR DEMIREL'S JUSTICE PARTY WAS VIGOROUSLY CHALLENGED DURING THE CAMPAIGN BY ITS MAIN OPPOSITION, THE REPUBLICAN PEOPLE'S PARTY LED BY MR ISMET INONU, 85-YEAR-OLD VETERAN OF TURKISH POLITICS.

IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT 61 PER CENT OF THE COUNTRY'S ELECTORATE OF 14-MILLION VOTED, COMPARED WITH 71 PER CENT IN THE 1965 POLL AND 81 PER CENT FOUR YEARS BEFORE THAT.

IN ISTANBUL AND THE MEDITERRANEAN TOWN OF ADANA, THE POLL WAS ONLY ABOUT 45 PER CENT, BUT INTEREST SEEMED GREATER IN RURAL AREAS.
