  • Description

Hong Kong is one of the cheapest places in the world for shopping - especially at Christmas. For this British colony is a free port - no customs duties are levied on imports - and the whole island becomes on huge "bargain basement" at this time of year. But while shoppers are happy with the situation, some traders are not. For they stocked up with Japanese goods well before Christmas, as they are usually in demand. But the recent revaluation of the yen has added 15 per cent to the prices of Japanese goods -- and now shoppers, with so many other goods to buy more cheaply, are not interested in buying Japanese So it looks as if traders are going to be left with large stocks of Japanese products long after Christmas has passed. From the Visnews Hong Kong Bureau comes this film, which takes a look at the situation.
