As accusations were made in Egypt that a secret U.S. deal had been made with israel to supply Phantom and Skyhawk war-planes, the Israeli Government put its Phantom fighter-bombers on show to the world's press on Thursday (June 11) at an air-base in Israel.
In Cairo on June 11th, Egypt's Minister of National guidance, Mr Mohamed Hassanein Heykal said in the El Ahram newspaper that the united States would certainly supply Israel with 25 phantoms and 100 Skyhawks requested. The only question, he alleged, was whether to announce the new deal or to keep is secret.
Israeli jets were in action the same day bombarding Egyptian positions along the canal zone, hitting batteries, mortar emplacements, bunkers and infantry positions. For several years Phantoms have been in action along Israel's frontiers.
Mr William Rogers, U.S. Secretary of State, announced on March 23 that his country had put off its decision on the request to supply Israel with additional weapons.
