  • Description

Two men have been responsible for a breakthrough in South africa's dialogue with Malawi. The most recent has been President Kamazu Banda who became the first black African President to make a state visit to South Africa, and the other is Malawi's Ambassador to South Africa, Mr. Joe Kachingwe.

Mr. Kachingwe made headlines in 1968 when he became the first black diplomat in South Africa. His diplomatic status was raised to that of ambassador earlier this month and it was the deciding factor leading to President Banda's visit.

The Malawi Ambassador in South Africa was previously High Commissioner in Kenya. Before he had been Permanent Secretary in the External Affairs Ministry in the External Ministry in Malawi. Mr Kachingwe joined the Malawi diplomatic service in 1964 and has served in London and Accra and with his country's delegation to the United Nations.

He is married to a Rhodesian, formerly Miss Sarah Chabvunduka, who was the first Rhodesian African woman to graduate from the University of Rhodesia and later taught in Malawi. They have two daughters.
