  • Description

A crowd shouted "death to the assassins" and moved in on two young Arabs on Tuesday (August 7) as they left the Law Courts in Athens after being charged with wilful manslaughter following Sunday's (August 5) attack on Athens Airport.

The two, who gave their names as Jehad Mohamed, born in occupied Palestine, and Talaat Hussein, born in Cairo, appeared before Public Prosecutor Ioannis Kyriazis and were charged on six counts, including wilful manslaughter, which carries a possible death penalty.

The men were arrested at Athens airport after three people were killed and 55 injured in an attack with hand grenades and automatic gunfire in the crowded transit lounge.

The two Arabs, who are 21, admitted they had attacked a queue of passengers waiting to catch a flight to New York.

They told the prosecutor they had the impression in passengers were migrants to Israel and they had instructions to attack them.

As they were led out of the court building a shouting crowd had to be held back by a strong police detachment.
