  • Description

Uruguay's military backed government shut down Montevideo University on Sunday (October 28) and arrested the rector and 150 staff and students, after a student died in an explosion there.

Police say the 22-year-old Spanish student Marcos Caridad Jordan was killed while making a bomb in the engineering faculty on Saturday (October 27). Troops who occupied the university the next day, claim to have uncovered a major arsenal of petrol bombs, guns and home made bazookas and a large amount of Marxist propaganda in hide-outs.

President Bordaberry signed the decree authorising the occupation after a meeting of the National Security Council. Students immediately denounced the government action as an expected move to seize control of the country's only University and last remaining democratically ordered institution.
