  • Description

Posters have become a popular form of art in Poland within the last decade. The world's first Museum of Poster has been established in a historic building near Warsaw.

SYNOPSIS: At the National School of Art in Warsaw, special classes are devoted entirely to Poster art. One of the Professors, Henryil Tomaszewski, a veteran poster painter, teaches his skill to advanced students at the school. The first poster was printed 500 years ago, depicting runaway slaves in Egypt. In 1866 a printer in Paris produced a recognisable colour poster. But the big break-through for the poster has come in the mid-twentieth century, when technological development made production cheap.

The poster almost always reflects some sort of political or social change. It is a new graphic language which combines the clarity of traditional art with the impact of modern. It is available to everyone and appeals to almost everyone. Sociologists analyze it, artists are intrigued by it.

In order to bring poster art closer to the younger generation, Poland's poster Museum has organized a number of displays as well as lectures in schools throughout the country.

The Museum now has collected a total of 30,000 posters from around the world, acquired from international exchanges or by donation.

Since its opening in 1968 the Museum has organized 35 exhibitions. One of the exhibitions was part of a world wide exchange programme, with posters from the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the National Gallery in Bratislava. The other exhibitions dealt with specific themes, representing political, economic, and historical events. Some were devoted to single subjects, such as the anti-fascist poster, the Polish musical poster, the theatre poster or the world sports poster. But there is still a great future for the poster. It could become inflatable, mobile, washable and three dimensional. The possibilities endless.
