  • Description

THE FIRST FILM FROM SUDAN SINCE THE PRESENT CRISIS BEGAN LAST WEEK.

STUDENTS ROAMED THROUGH THE STREETS OF KHARTOUM ON MONDAY NIGHT IN WHAT WAS BOTH A DEMONSTRATION AND CELEBRATION. ARMOURED VEHICLES, WHICH HAD BEEN ON PATROL FOLLOWING EARLIER RIOTING, MOVED IN, BUT THERE WAS NO VIOLENCE.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS AGAINST A BAN ON UNIVERSITY DISCUSSIONS, WHICH EARLIER HAD BEEN CRITICAL OF THE GOVERNMENT'S POLICY TOWARDS HEALING THE DISHARMONY, MAINLY RELIGIOUS, BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH OF SUDAN.

AT THE SAME TIME, THEY CELEBRATED THE DISSOLVING THAT DAY OF THE TWO RULING BODIES: THE SUPREME COUNCIL OF THE ARMED FORCES AND THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS. THE DEMONSTRATION WENT ON INTO THE EARLY HOURS OF THE MORNING.

MEANWHILE, CAIRO RADIO REPORTED TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) THAT STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS WERE STILL ROAMING THE STREET OF KHARTOUM. SUDAN'S RADIO AND TELEVISION SERVICES HAVE SUSPENDED TRANSMISSIONS.

EARLIER, PRESIDENT ABBOUD, APPEALING TO THE NATION TO KEEP CALM, THANKED THE PEOPLE FOR THEIR SUPPORT IN HIS ACTION DISSOLVING THE TWO RULING BODIES. HE SAID HE WAS WORKING TO FORM A NATIONALIST TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT TO RULE UNTIL A SATISFACTORY CONSTITUTION WAS DRAFTED.

(THE PRESENT UNREST BEGAN LAST THURSDAY. EIGHT PEOPLE HAVE BEEN KILLED IN RIOTING).
