Background: Coming in to land at Dobbins Air Base, Marietta, Georgia, USA October 21, a giant Strategic Air Command B-47 jet bomber overshot the runway. Falling into a ravine, it came to rest only 100 yards short of Georgia's busiest highway. Fire started, and the crew of four leapt to safety when they failed to control it. Only seconds later, a series of small explosions shook the wreckage as 3 million dollars worth of bomber went up in smoke.

One of the 'plane's crew said the aircraft braking system failed. The two-mile runway and a small braking parachute were not enough to avoid disaster.

Fortunately, the only injury was a scratch on the navigator's hand, but fire-fighters had a narrow escape when part of the wreckage suddenly exploded and burst into flames.

The plane had been ferried into Dobbins Air Base from Texas for modifications.
