Background: INTRODUCTION: British Aerospace took their latest passenger aircraft, the BeA 146, for its first test flight on Thursday (3 September).Already 35 of the four-jet engined aircraft have been ordered by airlines and British Aerospace believe that this model will be a best-seller.

SYNOPSIS: At one stage it was doubtful that the 146 would ever be completed.Work was stopped once due to rising fuel costs. But in 1978 British Aerospace decided that the jet engines would be cheaper to run that the old turbo props and work went on.And on Thursday (3 September) the plane flew for the first time.

There has been great interest in the project from airlines all over the world, but British Aerospace believes most of their planes will be sold in the United States as the 146 is ideal for short distance flights between small airports.

British Aerospace says that airlines will need 1,200 planes of this type by 1990 and the 146 should capture 30 per cent of this lucrative market. They say they will need to sell 250 planes to break even.

The first flight lasted an hour and thirty-five minutes.Afterwards test pilot Michael Goodfellow said it handled even better than had been predicted. He said it was very stable and responsive and seemed very economical.Environmentalists will be pleased to know that the 146 is also exceptionally quiet.
