  • Description

A fragile ceasefire late Sunday (2 March) ended 22 hours of fierce fighting between Government troops and heavily armed demonstrators in which at least 15 persons were killed and many more wounded in the ancient Phoenician port town of Sidon.

The fighting -- in which both sides used anti-tank missiles and 106-millimetre recoilless rifles -- was ignited by a dispute over fishing rights. It began with a demonstration by Sidon's fishermen against the granting by the Government of exclusive fishing rights to one large Lebanese company for the whole of the country's Mediterranean coastline. The Sidon fishermen -- who use small dinghies and whose only modern fishing device is the indiscriminate use of dynamite -- say the new company will industrialise the trade and rob them of their livelihood.

The ceasefire took effect Sunday evening when Government troops moved out of the southern port town -- about 30 miles (48 kilometres) south of Beirut -- and its inhabitants nervously left the shelter of their homes to inspect the extensive damage.

Newsmen said five soldiers and 10 demonstrators were killed in the fighting, which wrecked the top two floors of the town's tallest building, shattered windows in many others, left shell holes in many storefronts and burned-out cars still smoking in the streets.

As a local citizens' committee called a day of mourning on Monday (3 March) political observers said the situation -- even if the ceasefire held -- could seriously threaten the four-month-old Government of Prime Minister Rashid Al-Solh.
