    RHODESIAN TROOPS, ON THE ALERT SINCE FIGHTING BETWEEN UNITED NATIONS FORCES AND PRESIDENT TSHOMBE'S ARMY BROKE OUT IN KATANGA, CARRIED OUT A 16-HOUR EXERCISE NEAR KITWE, IN THE COPPERBELT OF NORTHERN RHODESIA, OCT 14-15.

    MEN OF THE 3RD BATTALION, ROYAL RHODESIAN REGIMENT, WERE THE ATTACKERS, AND LOCAL DEFENCE VOLUNTEERS AND LIGHT INFANTRY THE DEFENDERS OF A DESERTED AFRICAN COMPOUND WHICH HAD LONG FALLEN INTO WRECK AND RUIN. ABOUT 700 MEN-ALL OF THEM EUROPEANS - TOOK PART IN THE EXERCISE.

    NORTHERN RHODESIA - AND MORE SPECIFICALLY THE COPPERBELT - HAS RECENTLY BEEN THE SCENE OF WIDESPREAD AFRICAN DISTURBANCES. THE SECURITY FORCES DEALING WITH THESE DISTURBANCES HAVE THEMSELVES BEEN ACCUSED OF "ARSON AND ATROCITIES" BY THE LEADER OF THE UNITED NATIONAL INDEPENDENCE PARTY, KENNETH KAUNDA.
