    VIOLENCE HAS MARKED THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN THE PHILIPPINES. DURING POLLING TODAY (TUESDAY) FIVE PEOPLE WERE KILLED, BRINGING THE DEATH TOLL SINCE CAMPAIGNING BEGAN TO 46.

    THE VIOLENCE FLARED AS CHARGES OF CHEATING AND COUNTER CHARGES WERE EXCHANGED THROUGHOUT THE DAY. THERE WERE ALLEGATIONS THAT ARMED THUGS HAD TERRORISED VOTERS IN SOME AREAS, AND FAKE NOTICES WHICH STATED CANDIDATES HAD WITHDRAWN WHEN IN FACT THEY WERE STILL IN THE POLITICAL RACE WERE DISTRIBUTED.

    AN ESTIMATED EIGHT MILLION OF THE COUNTRIES 10 1/2 MILLION VOTERS WENT TO THE POLLS.

    DESPITE BLOODSHED AND ALLEGATIONS OF BRIBERY, FORCES AND CHEATING, ELECTION OFFICIALS DESCRIBED THE SITUATION AS NORMAL.

    VIOLENCE HAS BECOME PART OF PHILIPPINE ELECTIONS. IN THE 1961 ELECTION 85 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES, AND POLICE HAVE DESCRIBED TODAY'S ELECTION AS RELATIVELY QUIET.

    AT A RALLY ON FRIDAY FOR THE OUTSIDE CANDIDATE, SENATOR RAUL MANGLAPUS, STUDENTS BURNED EFFIGIES OF PRESIDENT DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL - THE LIBERAL PARTY CANDIDATE - AND SENATOR FERNANDO MARCOS OF THE NATIONALIST PARTY.
