Background: The twelfth meeting of OAMPI -- the African and Malagasy Industrial Property Office -- opened in Abidjan on Friday (18 January) with delegates attending from 13 African countries.
The two-day meeting, hosted by the Ivory Coast Ministry of Economics and Finance, brought together ministers of the Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Gabonese Republic, Ivory Coast, Chad, Mauritania, Senegal, Upper Volta, Niger, Toto, Dahomey, the Congo Republic and the Malagasy Republic. It followed a preparatory session of from the 13 countries.
OAMPI was formed in 1962 -- Its job is to look after trade-marks, copyrights, industrial design and other industrial and cultural matters requiring inter-African co-operation.
This year's conference discussed a proposed agreement on literary and artistic copyrights, and how OAMPI could extend its role to cover these areas. It also decided to set up a regional file on copyrights.
The conference was attended by observers of OCAM -- the Organisation Commune Africans Malgache ???t Mauricienne -- which is being re-organised this year. The OAMPI meeting discussed its own re-organisation in the light of its co-operation with OCAM.
