Background: The New South Wales Government has declared several Sydney beaches available for nude sunbathing and swimming -- but local residents haven't taken kindly to the skinny-dipping "invaders".
Residents of Reef, Lady Jane and Forty Baskets beaches claim that the nudity is imperilling family beach days and is attracting voyeurs and perverts. One leading protestor referred to Reef Beach as "Wran's pervert paradise", venting his wrath on the Premier of New South Wales, Mr Neville Wran, who proclaimed the beaches as nude bathing reserves.
Up to 300 opponents of naked beach gambolling are now staging " clad ins " -- mass family takeovers of beach areas in an effort to disrupt to serenity of the nude gatherings.
However, the unclad are taking little notice of the demonstrations and the protestors are finding it difficult to stop their children from stripping off and joining junior nudes in the surf!
The nudists say that many of the protestors seemed to be visiting the beaches for the first time in months -- if not for the first time ever.
Protests at Reef beach were watched by policemen-- in bathing suits -- but the nude swimmers were completely indifferent to the incidents and made no attempts to cover up.
Some protestors said they weren't opposed to nude sunbathing and swimming as such -- but felt that the beaches were overcrowded with both clad and unclad groups and more ares for nudity should be set aside.
Residents near the beaches, which are accessible only through steep tracks through undergrowth, said they feared for the safety of their children who played in the area as the nude enclaves could attract sexual deviates.
But while the "clad ins" continue, growing numbers of nude sunlovers are gathering at the beaches -- with the law on their side.
