  • Description

A Japanese university team has reached the North Pole, after trekking across the artic with dog sleds.

SYNOPSIS: The team, from Japan's Nihon University, spent 192-thousand American dollars on their expedition. The 13-member university group was sponsored by a Tokyo newspaper and a television station. A spotter aircraft confirmed their position at the North Pole, and there were congratulations for a team which was only the third ever to reach the North Pole with dogs. Rear-Admiral Robert Peary -- an American was the first man to the pole and he did the journey with dogs in 1909.

The nationalism which characterised the polar explorations of earlier this century was missing from the latest expedition. The Japanese team raised the flags of four nations, to confirm that the North Pole belongs not to one nation, but to all. The nihon University group reached their destination six days before the Japanese explorer Naomi Uemera. He made the journey alone, also using dog sleds, across the 500 miles (800 kilometres) of frozen wasteland, on a slightly different route from the university team.
