  • Description

THE TOWN OF MUNTILAN ON THE INDONESIAN ISLAND OF JAVA IS THREATENED WITH INUNDATION BY MILLIONS OF CUBIC FEET OF COLD LAVA WHICH COULD BE WASHED BY TROPICAL RAIN FROM A VOLCANO SOME 15 MILES (24 KMS) AWAY. THE VOLCANO, MERAPI, RECENTLY ERUPTED AND ITS LAVA, THOUGH NOW COLD, COULD WIPE OUT MUNTILAN WITH ITS POPULATION OF 30,000.

MERAPI FIRST ERUPTED IN 1888 AND AGAIN IN 1961. BOTH ERUPTIONS TOOK A HEAVY TOLL OF LIVES. IN ITS RECENT ERUPTION, ITS MOLTEN LAVA DESTROYED ACRES OF FARMLAND. IN MERAPI, SOME VILLAGERS HAVE ALREADY EVACUATED THEIR HOMES. OTHERS USED HUGE BOULDERS TO SEAL OFF A MOUNTAIN STREAM FROM WHICH COLD LAVA COULD BE WASHED DOWN AS A RESULT OF TROPICAL RAIN.

THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT HAS SENT ARMY JEEPS INTO THE AREA WITH FOOD SUPPLIES AND CLOTHING. THE GOVERNOR OF CENTRAL JAVA, MR. MUNADI, PERSONALLY EXPLAINED THE DANGEROUS SITUATION TO THE VILLAGERS AS HIS WIFE DISTRIBUTED FOOD. MEANWHILE, OBSERVATORY TOWERS HAVE BEEN ERECTED IN THE AREA FOR VOLCANOLOGISTS TO KEEP A CLOSE WATCH ON THE VOLCANO.
