ALONGSIDE IT ON THE TARMAC STOOD ITS JUNIOR BY TWELVE YEARS, THE NEW T-4, ROVER'S LATEST GAS TURBINE PROTOTYPE, DESIGNED FOR PRODUCTION.

    T-4 AND JET-1 WENT ON THEIR JOURNEY ACROSS THE ATLANTIC IN THOROUGHLY MODERN FASHION - IN A SEABOARD CL-44 AIR FREIGHTER WHOSE TAIL HINGED TO ONE SIDE TO LET THE TWO CARS IN. IN NEW YORK, THE ROVER COMPANY INTENDS MERELY TO BOOST BRITISH PRESTIGE BY SHOWING THE CARS. THEY WILL NEITHER TAKE ORDERS NOR DEMONSTRATE THE NEW PROTOTYPE.

    ITS DASHBOARD HAS ONLY FOUR MAIN DIALS INDICATING THE PERFORMANCE OF AN ENGINE WHICH MAY SOON REVOLUTIONISE CAR PRODUCTION THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE BASIC OPERATIONS IN THE GAS TURBINE ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE IN A CONVENTIONAL CAR ENGINE, WITH THE DIFFERENCE THAT THEY ARE CARRIED OUT SIMULTANEOUSLY IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE TURBINE. TRANSMISSION IS FULLY AUTOMATIC, AND WHEN THE T-4 WAS DEMONSTRATED ON THE AIRPORT PERIMETER TRACK IT MADE NO MORE NOISE THAN THE HISS OF A KETTLE BOILING.

    WITH A TOP SPEED OF 120 MPH AND AN AVERAGE FUEL RATE OF 18 MILES PER GALLON, THE SLEEK-LINED SALOON COULD BE COMPETING WITH CONVENTIONAL LUXURY MODELS AT A PRICE AROUND GBP3,000 WITHIN THE NEXT TWO OR THREE YEARS, IF MARKETING PROBLEMS COULD BE SOLVED IN THAT SPACE OF TIME. ON THE ENGINEERING SIDE ALONE, ROVERS ARE CONFIDENT THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY BROKEN THE BACK OF A HARD BUT POTENTIALLY REWARDING JOB.
