  • Description

REPRESENTATIVES OF EIGHTEEN THOUSAND FRENCH CIVILIANS WHO WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS WHEN AMERICAN FORCES LEAVE MILITARY BASES IN FRANCE TODAY (SATURDAY) LAUNCHED A NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO PUBLICISE THEIR PREDICAMENT.

THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA ARE TO VACATE THEIR MILITARY BASES BY APRIL FIRST NEXT YEAR UNDER AGREEMENTS WITH FRANCE.

ABOUT SIX HUNDRED REPRESENTATIVES OF CIVILIANS EMPLOYED AT BASES IN VARIOUS PARTS OF FRANCE TODAY DEMANDED THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT'S EFFORTS TO FIND ALTERNATIVE EMPLOYMENT AND PROVIDE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO THOSE MADE REDUNDANT.

THE UNITED STATES HAS ALREADY INDICATED THAT FRENCH CIVILIANS AT THE BASES WILL BE ENTITLED TO COMPENSATION TOTALLING NEARLY 2.7-MILLION DOLLARS (GBP1-MILLION STERLING).

OFFICIALS REPRESENTING THE CIVILIAN WORKERS SAID ONE THOUSAND PEOPLE HAD ALREADY LOST THEIR JOBS AND TWO THOUSAND OTHERS WERE UNDER NOTICE.

THE MOVEMENT FOR GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE TO THE CIVILIANS IS NONPOLITICAL AND DOES NOT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT'S ORDER TO ITS NATO ALLIES TO EVACUATE THE BASES.
