  • Description

At least 64 people died in two days of bitter fighting between Hindus and Moslems in India's Maharashtra State. Armed police have been called out yesterday (Saturday) to patrol the main high way joining major towns in the area as thousands of refugees stream out of the worst hit town of Bhiwandi.

Some 30 people died in the town in the violence that flared when a procession commemorating the Mahratta warrior, Shivaji, who fought Moslem rulers three centuries ago, passed through the Moslem area of the town.

Buildings were burnt as the violence flared into full scale rioting. The fighting spilled over into nearby towns where a number of people died violently.

A curfew has been imposed in the State and extra police and troops rushed in.
