  • Description

SEVEN ATHLETES AND SIX BOXERS FROM GHANA HAVE BEGUN TWO WEEKS' HIGH ALTITUDE TRAINING AT THOMSON'S FALLS IN KENYA IN PREPARATION FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES AT MEXICO CITY IN OCTOBER. THE GHANAIANS ARE THE FIRST OLYMPIC TEAM TO ACCEPT AN OFFER BY B.A.T., KENYA, LIMITED, TO TRAIN AT THE CENTRE.

THE THOMSON'S FALLS TRACK, 100 MILES NORTH OF NAIROBI, IS 7,743 FEET (2,343 METRES) ABOVE SEA LEVEL, AND WAS BUILT AT A COST OF GBP5,000.

KENYAN OFFICIALS HAVE INVITED ALL WORLD ATHLETIC TEAMS COMPETING IN THE MEXICO OLYMPICS TO TRAIN AT THE CENTRE WHICH HAS THE SAME ALTITUDE AS ATHLETES WILL ENCOUNTER IN MEXICO CITY.

ORIGINALLY, THE TRACK WAS BUILT TO BENEFIT THE KENYAN TEAM BUT NOW THE OFFER IS OPEN TO ANY COUNTRY WHO APPLY TO THE KENYA AMATEUR ASSOCIATION.

THE GHANA BOXERS ARE EXPECTED TO MEET KENYA IN A FRIENDLY CONTEST IN NAIROBI ON AUGUST 31 BUT THE ATHLETES CANNOT COMPETE IN A MATCH AGAINST KENYA ON SEPTEMBER 7, AS KENYA HAD HOPED, BECAUSE GHANA'S OWN OLYMPIC TRIALS ARE SCHEDULED FOR THAT DATE.

GHANA'S NATIONAL ATHLETICS COACH, MR. E.C. NYKO, SAID THAT THE TEAM WAS PRIMARILY IN KENYA TO FIND OUT THE EFFECTS OF THE HIGH ALTITUDE ON ATHLETES, AND THEY EXPECTED TO LEARN A LOT.
