  • Description

The first "Young People's Day" was held in the People's Republic of Mozambique on Thursday (26 June), to celebrate the country's newly acquired independence.

Festivities climaxed with a massive youth rally in the Machave Stadium in Cam Phumo (formerly Lourenco Marques).

Presidents Samora Machel watched displays of gymnastics, national dancing and a grand parade by a bearer carrying the "Torch of Unity".

The youth rally also marked the last of the independence celebrations. President Machel ordered the people of Mozambique back to work on Friday (27 June).

He said "work, work and more work" is the keynote of the Frelimo policy.

Frelimo ... the nationalist movement that wrested independence from the Portuguese .. is now the only political party in Mozambique.
