    A conference with the theme of "Educational Broadcasting and Evolution of the World of Education" opened in Abidjan, the capital of the Ivory Coast on Friday (6 February).

    It was the sixteenth General Assembly of the Union of African National Radio and Television Networks (URTNA) and the Minister of State, Mr. Auguste Denise, officially declared the conference open.

    In his address at inaugural session, the Information Minister, Laurent Dona-Fologo expressed satisfaction at the chance of speaking to an international meeting on mass media. He said the organisation should encourage co-operation and solidarity among its members, particularly in times of national emergency.

    Among the agenda items for the meeting was the possible admission of Somalia and Liberia as URTNA's 29th and 30th member countries. Numerous speakers were also to address the congress.

    The countries represented at the three day conference included Nigeria, Algeria, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Libya and the Congo. Several observers from European radio and television stations also attended.
