Background: AN ALL-AUSTRALIAN FINAL IN THE MEN'S DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP AT WIMBLEDON TO BE PLAYED ON SATURDAY. THAT'S THE SITUATION TODAY (THURSDAY) AFTER THE TWO SEMI-FINAL MATCHES BOTH OF WHICH WERE WON BY AUSTRALIAN PAIRS.

WITH EVENING SHADOWS BEGINNING TO CREEP ACROSS THE COURT AN EXCITING MATCH/DEVELOPED BETWEEN EMERSON AND FLETCHER OF AUSTRALIA AND THE NEW ZEALAND PAIR GERRARD AND CROOKENDEN.

IN THE FIRST SET THE TWO PAIRS SEEMED EQUALLY MATCHED. SOME GOOD VOLLEYS FROM THE NEW ZEALANDERS KEPT THE HIGHLY - RATED AUSTRALIANS ON THEIR TOES AND THE SET RAN TO TWENTY SIX GAMES BEFORE EMERSON AND FLETCHER BROKE THROUGH. THEY WON THE SET 14 GAMES TO 12.

THE SECOND SET BEGAN IN SIMILAR FASHION WITH TWO GAMES GOING TO EACH PAIR. HOWEVER EMERSON AND FLETCHER SHOWED GREATER STAMINA AND WENT AWAY TO WIN THE SET COMPARATIVELY EASILY, BY SIX GAMES TO TWO.

THE THIRD SET DEVELOPED INTO A TIGHT DUEL. EMERSON AND FLETCHER WON THE FIRST FEW GAMES WITH EASE. BUT IN THE LAST GAME A TUSSLE DEVELOPED WHERE AT ONE POINT THE AUSTRALIANS HELD THREE MATCH POINTS. BRILLIANT PLAY BY THE NEW ZEALANDERS WON THE POINTS BACK - BUT ALL TO NO AVAIL AND THE AUSTRALIANS WON BY 6 GAMES TO 1.

THE FINAL WILL BE BETWEEN EMERSON AND FLETCHER AND STOLLE AND HEWITT. THIS IS NOT THE ONLY FINAL IN WHICH EMERSON AND STOLLE FACE ONE ANOTHER - IT'S AN ALL AUSTRALIAN FINAL FOR THE SINGLES CROWN TOO AND THESE TWO PLAYERS WILL MEET ON THE CENTRAL COURT TO DECIDE THE CHAMPIONSHIP.
