Background: Louis Stoval and Vicky Handyside of the United States won the pairs figure skating title in the World Roller Skating Championships in Essen, West germany on Thursday (18 October).
Miss. Stoval, 20, and her 29-year-old partner garnered 79.5 points to finish 1.3 points ahead of their compatriots, April Powell and Allen Abe Blass.
Evelyn Diehl and Michael Weingart of West Germany, finished third among ten pairs entered for the event.
The American victory was in very strong competition against pairs representing West Germany, Italy, Brazil, and Austria. A distinguished panel of adjudicators from Australia, France, Italy, Belgium, Spain, the United States and West Germany, had a difficult time splitting the two top American pairs. But a sparkling performance by Miss Stoval and Handyside clinched their narrow win.
The Championships is being staged in the large Gruga Hall. Starting on Thursday (18 October), the World Roller Skating Championships continue until Sunday (21 October).
SYNOPSIS: The flags of many nations fluttered on the rink of the Gruga Hall in Essen, West Germany on Thursday to herald the opening of the World Roller Skating Championships.
After months of preparation and days of intense practice,the figure skating pairs were the first wheeled athletes to thrill the large crowd. On the rink, West Germany's star couple, Evelyn Diehl and Michael Weingart.
A dazzling performance by the West Germans, but eventually only good enough to earn them third place.
The United States team of April Powell and Allen Abe Blass - strong contenders for the world pairs title. Their main competition was known to be from compatriots Louis Stoval and Vicky Handyside, but there was also fierce competition from Italy, Brazil and Austria.
This was a performance to stir the audience into joyous applause, but only good enough to put them into the runners-up position.
And here were the couple who were to give the master performance of the pairs competition - Vicky Handyside and Louis Stoval of the United States.
With a superb display of perfect timing and faultless execution, Miss. Stoval and her partner won 79.5 points - 1.3 points more than April Powell and Abe Blass - to become World pairs figure skating champions.
The final result was, first - Stoval and handyside (U.S.A.) second ??? Powell and ??? (West Germany). The World Raller Skating Championships continue until Sunday.
