For the past few days, Teheran has been busy preparing to receive Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh for their 4-day visit, beginning today, March 2nd. The Queen is the first reigning British monarch to visit Persia.

Hundreds of Persian carpets were laid along the 4-mile royal route from the airport to the city, which the Queen and Duke were to enter in two golden State coaches, each drawn by six grey horses. British union jacks and red, white and green Persian flags were hung side by side along the Avenue Shah Reza, and the city emblem was also much in evidence.

Busy preparations have also been going on in the big square in Teheran where the Mayor was to present the Queen with the Key of the city.

The Royal party will stay in Golestan Palace, and will also make use of the adjacent Brilliant Palace. Nearby are grey planes trees and blue fountains. No other head of state has been allowed to use Golestan Palace, France have been installed in the Palace for the occasion.
