    Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka arrived home in Tokyo on Saturday (30 September) after his visit to the People's Republic of China.

    Having successfully re-established the long-severed diplomatic links between the two countries, Premier Tanaka announced he was now working for a peace treaty with the Soviet Union.

    He also told newsmen that during his talks with Chinese Premier Chou En-lai, he had won China's understanding of Japan's practical problems over Taiwan.

    As Premier Tanaka landed in Tokyo, 2,500 - riot police guarded the airport to prevent demonstrations by right-wing groups. About 25 people were detained around the airport building.

    SYNOPSIS: A fruitful six days of talks behind him, Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka returned to Tokyo on Saturday, to a warm welcome after his official visit to the People's Republic of China. Premier Tanaka achieved the main object of his trip, and diplomatic links between Japan and china are now re-established after several decades of estrangement...and, at times, open hostility.
