  • Description

NIGERIAN FEDERAL FORCES WERE STILL MEETING RESISTANCE FROM SECESSIONISTS BIAFRAN SNIPERS AND SMALL UNITS 15 DAYS AFTER THE FEDERAL SEABORNE INVASION OF CALABAR, A FEDERAL ARMY SPOKESMAN TOLD REPORTERS IN THE FORMER SLAVE TRADE PORT YESTERDAY (THURSDAY).

THE MAN WHO COMMANDED THE CALABAR INVASION ON 18 OCTOBER, LIEUTENANT-COLONEL BENJAMIN ADEKUNLE SAID HIS FORCES HAD OCCUPIED ALL KEY POINTS OF THE TOWN WITHIN FOUR HOURS.

COLONEL ADEKUNLE SAID HE LOST 60 MEN IN THE CALABAR OPERATION. THE BIAFRANS LOST 2,000, HE SAID.

THEY HAD HOLED UP IN THE PRISON AND POLICE BARRACKS, HAD REFUSED LOUDSPEAKER CALLS TO SURRENDER AND HAD BEEN KILLED IN THEIR HUNDREDS INSIDE THE BUILDINGS, HE SAID.

THE NATIVE POPULATION OF CALABAR -- THE EFIK TRIBESMEN -- WHO LEFT THE TOWN WHEN BIAFRANS TOOK OVER, WERE SLOWLY RETURNING WITH BICYCLES, MATS AND HOUSEHOLD EFFECTS ON THEIR HEADS.

ON THE RIVERFRONT, FACTORIES AND WAREHOUSES STILL SMOULDERED AND SHOPS IN THE MARKET WERE GUTTED.

COLONEL ADEKUNLE SAID HE HAD KILLED FIVE MERCENARIES WITH THE BIAFRAN FORCES SINCE THE INVASION. HE ESTIMATED THAT THERE WERE STILL 50 MORE, INCLUDING EUROPEANS AND ASIANS, HIDING IN THE THICK JUNGLE AROUND CALABAR.

TODAY (FRIDAY), THE BIAFRAN COMMISSIONER FOR INFORMATION, DR. IFEAGWU EKE, SAID IN A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT MORE THAN 30,000 FEDERAL FORCES HAD BEEN KILLED IN THE FOUR-MONTH-OLD STRUGGLE. HE MADE NO MENTION OF BIAFRAN LOSSES.
