    DELEGATES AT THE 121-NATION WORLD TRADE CONFERENCE IN GENEVA, STAGED A MASS WALKOUT AS THE SOUTH AFRICAN MINISTER FOR ECONOMIC AFFAIRS DR DIEDERICHS, WALKED TO THE ROSTRUM YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY).

    IN HIS SPEECH AFTER THE WALKOUT, DR DIEDERICHS SAID SOUTH AFRICA SUPPORTED AN IMPROVED AND EXPANDED GATT (GENERAL AGREEMENT ON TARIFFS AND TRADE) AS A BASIC MEANS OF HELPING DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. REFERRING TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, DR DIEDERICHS SAID THAT IN SOUTH AFRICA'S EXPERIENCE THE HUMAN ELEMENT WAS OF PARAMOUNT IMPORTANCE.

    A NUMBER OF AFRICAN AND ASIAN DELEGATES WHO HAD WALKED OUT HEARD HIS SPEECH - FROM THE PUBLIC AND PRESS GALLERIES WHICH ARE NOT TECHNICALLY IN THE HALL OF THE CONFERENCE.

    SOME 80 DELEGATIONS FROM AFRICA, ASIA, LATIN, AMERICA AND THE COMMUNIST COUNTRIES WALKED OUT EARLIER WHEN PORTUGAL'S REPRESENTATIVE SPOKE. A BOYCOTT OF PORTUGUESE AND SOUTH AFRICAN SPEECHES HAD BEEN DECIDED ON EARLIER, IN PROTEST AGAINST THEIR POLICIES TOWARDS AFRICANS.

    THE CONFERENCE HAS NOW ENDED ITS GENERAL DEBATE AND IN NOW STARTING ITS WORK IN FIVE MAIN COMMITTEES. THE WORKING SESSIONS ARE LIKELY TO LAST TILL TOWARDS THE END OF MAY.
