Background: Prime Minister De Gaulle discussed November 26 Berlin and the Free Trade Area with Chancellor Audenauer at Bad Kreuznach, West Germany. It was their second meeting in two months.

Their meeting was a historic day in Franco-German relations: It was de Gaulle's first visit to West Germany since he visited French troops there after the war. The two leaders first met as such at de Gaulle's country home last September.

Bad Kreuznach is a small spa in the Palatinate where the Kaiser established his headquarters during the First World War. "This point," commented the London Times, "may have been overlooked."
The meeting was at de Gaulle's own request. The Chancellor met de Gaulle at Ramstein airbase and they travelled by train to Bad Kreuznach.

The General was accompanied by Foreign Minister de Murville and Finance Minister Pinay. With the Chancellor was Foreign Minister von Brentano, Economics Minister Erhard and Finance Minister Etzel.

De Gaulle was due to return to Paris the same night.

Their meeting came a day after the conference in Bonn of German Ambassadors in London, Washington, Rome and Moscow and Paris. Subject: Berlin.

Late news from the de Gaulle-Adenauer talks was that both emphasised the importance of maintaining four-power control of Berlin and of examining new ways of linking the Common Market with other European countries.
