Background: In the one thousand metres race the Kenyan runner Wilson Kiprugut was surprisingly beaten by the Melbourne university athlete, Ralph Doubell.
Doubell ran the distance in two minutes twenty-three point five seconds, only six tenths of a second outside the Victorian record. It was a good win, because Doubell had a tonsils operation only three weeks ago and had had little time to train. Kiprugut was favoured to win, was leading with only 220 yds to go, but Doubell put on a fast finishing spurt from fourth position and overtook the Kenyan about 50 yds before the finishing tape.
