Mexico's President Luis Echeverrisa arrived in Washington on Thursday (15 June) to begin two days of talks with President Nixon. The Mexican President was accompanied by his wife - and the couple were greeted on the White House lawn by Mr and Mrs Nixon.
In his speech of welcome the United States President outlined the importance of Mexican-United States friendship in his country's foreign policy.
Shortly after his White House welcome, President Echeverria appeared before the United States Congress and sharply criticised the United States for trying to come to terms with other major powers while ignoring the rights and interests of less developed nations. The Mexican leader said he found it "impossible to understand why the United States does not use the same boldness and imagination that it applies to solving complex problems with its enemies, to the solution of simple problems with its friends."

President Echeverria pointed out that the young children were the generation of the future. He told President Nixon that he often wondered what the world would be like when the children today were fully grown.
The Mexican President warned President Nixon that he and other world leaders had the responsibility to see that today 's children grew up into a world of peace. The President's remarks came as a surprise to 'Washington officials - who had expected their visitor to follow President Nixon's lead and discuss matters of particular concern to Mexico and the Untied States. One of the young women summoned form the crowd by President Echeverria was a newspaper writer, countess logan Lesson, who is married to an Italian and lives in Rome. She said that she came to the ceremony because her four-year-old daughter wanted to see President Nixon. The other young woman was a member of Mrs Nixon's press staff.
After the White House welcome, President Echeveerria addressed the United States Congress before beginning his talks wit President Nixon.
