    Election campaigns in Australia and New Zealand are attracting "gimmick" candidates, who are campaigning under absurd names and policies to highlight what they consider to be anomalies in the system of government.

    In December, the New Zealand federal election sported a candidate who called himself Mickey Mouse, and a political body known as The Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

    Now, in South Australia, a university student has dubbed himself Susie Creamcheese and is standing for the happy Birthday party.

    Susie -- a male -- has promised voters a slice of birthday oaks and "erotic fun" if he wins the poll against Gil Langley, a former Test cricketer, and Johnny Matthews, a Country and Western singer, in an Adelaide city election.

    Susie turned up unexpectedly at Adelaide University on Tuesday (6 March) while the Democratic Labour Party's Secretary, Mr. Posa, was addressing students on Australian political trends. Susie bounded on stage and was given a rousing ovation.

    A supporter also mounted the platform, stripped to his underpants and revealed a "Vote for Creamcheese" sign painted on his back.

    SYNOPSIS: A gimmick election candidate, called Susie Creamcheese, is applauded by students at Adelaide University, South Australia. Susie interrupted a talk by the Democratic Labour Party Secretary, Mr. Posa, on Tuesday. And the students obviously approved.
