  • Description

A BLIZZARD RAGED ACROSS SOUTHERN ENGLAND TODAY (SUNDAY) PARALYSING TRAFFIC EVERYWHERE AND TURNING STREETS OF MAJOR CITIES INTO A WHITE WILDERNESS. ONE OF THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALLS FOR YEARS CHOKED HUNDREDS OF ROADS - IN SOME COASTAL AREAS THE FAST-PILING DRIFTS OF SNOW WERE 20 FEET DEEP.

THE BLIZZARD, DESCRIBED AS THE WORST SINCE 1947, SWEPT ACROSS A NATION THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN IN THE GRIP OF ICE AND SNOW SINCE CHRISTMAS. LONDON WAS A "GRAVEYARD" OF ABANDONED CARS. MANY MOTORISTS WERE STRANDED IN THEIR CARS ALL NIGHT.

WILLING HANDS PUSHED A VISNEWS CAMERAMAN'S CAR - ANCHORED IN THICK SNOW AND ICE - AWAY FROM THE NORTH ACTON OFFICES FOR A SNOWMAN'S TOUR OF THE CAPITAL: A BLANKET OF WHITE OUTSIDE BUCKINGHAM PALACE AS THE HUARDS MARCHED ON DUTY; SNOW-PLOUGHS CLEARING TONS OF SNOW FROM THE ROADS; SUBMERGED CARS AND A FAIRYLAND TRAFALGAR SQUARE.

IN SOUTH WILTSHIRE, 300 PATIENTS AND STAFF OF A HOSPITAL WERE SURROUNDED BY MASSIVE DRIFTS AND SNOWPLOUGHS WERE TRYING TO FREE THEM. IN ELTHAM, ANOTHER SOUTHERN ENGLAND TOWN, WATER FROZE ON FIREMEN AS THEY FOUGHT A BLAZE AT A TEACHER'S COLLEGE.

TOWNS AND VILLAGES WERE REPORTED CUT OFF BY ROAD AND RAIL, THEIR SUPPLY LINES FOR FRESH FOOD BLOCKED. LONDON AIRPORT, PARALYSED BY THE STORM, WAS CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC AND EXPERTS SAID IT WOULD TAKE HOURS TO CLEAR THE RUNWAYS.

MEANWHILE, ICE AND FOG STILL HELD MOST OF BRITAIN IN A RELENTLESS GRIP WITH NO SIGNS OF A THAW. SNOW WAS EXPECTED TO SPREAD EAST LATER TODAY.
