  • Description

Belgium's second Antarctic expedition, the members of which will relieve those of the first expedition (who set out from Belgium on 12th November, 1957), left Ostend in the Norwegian ship "Polarhav" for the Antarctic on 15th November.

Led by Capt. Francois Bastin, head of the meteorological branch of the Belgian Air Force, this 2nd expedition hopes to reach the ice barrier on 26th December. It is to be met in Leopold III Bay by American and Russian icebreakers. If the ice should be too thick for these ships to open 1 channel for the "Polarhav" the members of the expedition will be flown to their base by helicopter.

The expedition took with them five Snocat vehicles and a number of sledge dogs.

The expedition has an extensive programme of scientific research to fulfil; will make two survey journeys into the interior of the Antarctic Continent; and is due to leave Antarctica on its return to Belgium in January, 1960 (by which time it will have been relieved by a third Belgian expedition).
