Background: The Greenpeace environmental organisation has halted its efforts to stop a British ship, "Gem", from dumping nuclear waste into the Atlantic, some 700 kilometres off the Lands End, England. The Greenpeace crew, aboard their ship, "Sirius", had approached "Gem" as containers of nuclear waste were dumped into the sea down a special chute. Six Greenpeace members chained themselves to the rigging of "Gem" in an effort to prevent the dumping. Then other Greenpeace members moved alongside the ship in inflatable dinghies at night in a commando-style raid. Crew members of "Gem finally turned hoses on the protesters, who gave up when there was no more waste to be dumped. In an impending court case in Holland, the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is applying for damages of 20,000 pounds sterling for each day the dumping was delayed.
