  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Egypt and Spain have called for the resumption of the Geneva Peace Conference on the Middle East. The call came on Monday (31 January) during a visit by Spanish Foreign Minister Marcelino Oreja, in Egypt on the third leg of his Middle East tour.

SYNOPSIS: Senor Oreja, who flew in from Iraq, immediately went into talks with Egyptian Prime Minister Mamdouh Salem. In a joint communique, the two nations also stressed the need for establishing a Middle East peace based on Israel's withdrawal from Arab territories occupied since the 1967 war and recognition of Palestinian rights.

Senor Oreja, who went on for talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ismail Fahmi, praised Egypt for what he called its 'serious and continued efforts to reach a Middle East peace settlement'. The communique also expressed joint support for efforts to establish an international economic system narrowing the gap between industrialised and developing nations. It went on to condemn apartheid in South Africa.
