  • Description

Protests against the forthcoming French nuclear tests in the Pacific spread to France itself at the weekend (5th & 6th May).

Over eighty French anti-pollution organisations held protest demonstrations across the country, including Paris itself.

Other demonstrations took place in Marseilles, Montpellier, Lyons, Strasbourg, Cambery, Beziers, Cherbourg, Dieppe, Dijon, and Toulouse. In Toulouse ten police were injured during the demonstrations and a number of people were arrested.

The climax of the protests was a mass meeting on Sunday (6 May) in front of the military staff college in Paris.

The protesters want all nuclear explosions stopped and a temporary halt to the construction of nuclear installations.

The nuclear tests in the Pacific have been defended as "clean" by former French Prime Minister, M. Couve de Murville. He told the Australian Broadcasting Commission that France had a good conscience because it was taking every precaution to ensure that the tests were clean.

He added that the French tests were "Much less harmful than what has been done before on quite a different scale by the United States, by the Soviet Union, by the British on Australian soil -- and even by the Chinese as things are going."
