SYNOPSIS: A government building in the Turkish capital of Ankara was the scene on Friday of a cabinet meeting in which Prime Minister Suleiman Demirel informed his ministers of his decision to resign. Mr. Demirel, who has held the office since 1965, stepped down in the face of a threat by the country's military leaders that they would take over if a new government wasn't formed. Armed Forces chief General Memduh Tagmac led the military commanders in Friday' intervention. They demanded a new government which would be able to enforce internal security and carry through a programme of reforms.

Mr. Demirel was surrounded by pressmen when he left the meeting. There's been mounting political agitation aimed at his downfall and he's faced serious party splits affecting his majority. It's been suggested that current talks between political and military leaders may result in some sort of coalition emerging.
