  • Description

Niger's new uranium refining plant in Arlit, in the north of the country, is now in full operation. It was opened last month by President Hamani Diori. The factory was built with finance from France, Niger, West Germany and Italy. It will produce 750 tons of uranium per year from 350,000 tons of ore. First production began at the factory last July and another complex is planned for 1974.

The mine has great importance to Niger, which is reportedly one of Africa's less developed countries. The country's annual budget is only some 40 million U.S. dollars (about 17 million pounds Sterling). It's expected that the Arlit project will yield about 4 million U.S. dollars (about 1.5 million pounds Sterling) per year with the possibility or good annual increments.
