  • Description

Brass bands and officials gave a heroes welcome to a small group of Turkish commandos when they landed at the south eastern port of Mersin in Turkey on Friday (5 September) after being withdrawn from Cyprus.

The commandos had participated in the invasion of Cyprus last year, and Turkish Defence Ministry officials in Ankara say they will not be replaced. According to unofficial estimates however, there are still at least 35,000 Turkish troops on the island.

Some observers believe that the withdrawal of the commandos may be token gesture to help persuade the United States Congress to lift its embargo on military aid and sales to Turkey. The embargo was imposed in February as the result of United States dissatisfaction with Turkey's policy on Cyprus.

On Saturday, the Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash, left Ankara on his way to New York for a fourth round of negotiations with the Greek-Cypriot representative, Mr. Glafkos Clerides, on a statement of the Cyprus problem. Before the left he said that the Greek-Cypriot side was working at international gatherings against agreements which he and Mr. Clerides had already agreed. This could not continue, said Mr. Denktash.
