Background: The outgoing Canadian Prime Minister, Mr.John Diefenbaker, wound up his four day election campaign of British Columbia on 25th.March. During his activities in this part of Canada, the 63 year-old Conservative leader not only addressed large meeting of party supporters and workers and toured Vancouver in a 59 car procession, but spoke with Red Indians also. From Chief Mathias Joe he received an Indian Thunder-Stick.

Biggest meeting of this phase of the campaign was at the Exhibition Forum, Vancouver, an ice-hockey arena, with a capacity of five thousand. Although there have not been any burning issues, unemployment is uppermost in the minds of the industrial constituency candidates. On this score Mr.Diefenbaker said that the easing of the tight money policy of the Liberals by the Conservatives, over the period since their return to power in June of last year, has led to a stabilization of the unemployment figures.

The pending elections were brought about by Mr.Diefenbaker's wish to consolidate his party's position in the last Parliament. The Conservatives rise to power in June 1957 brought to an end 22 years of Liberal Government.
