Background: POLIO VICTIMS, NUMBERING ABOUT 180, ARRIVED AT LOURDES STATION ON SUNDAY.THEY WERE ABOARD A SPECIAL TRAIN, CONVERTED TO CARRY THE POLIOMYELITIS VICTIMS.SOME OF THE PASSENGERS HAD TO HAVE SPECIAL "IRON-LUNGS) RESPIRATORS.

THERE WAS CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTY IN GETTING THE VICTIMS OFF THE TRAIN, AND SEVERAL HOURS WERE SET ASIDE FOR THE TASK TODAY (MONDAY).THE POLIO VICTIMS WERE BEING TAKEN TO THE FAMOUS CAVE AT LOURDES TO TAKE PART IN PRAYERS AND APPEALS FOR 'MIRACULOUS CURES'.

IN 1858, A PEASANT GIRL, BERNADETTE SOUBIROUS, EXPERIENCED A NUMBER OF MIRACULOUS VISIONS IN THE GROTTO HERE - VISIONS CONFIRMED AS AUTHENTIC BY THE POPE OF THE TIME.AS A RESULT, TODAY THOUSANDS OF PILGRIMS ANNUALLY VISIT THE TOWN AND PRAY FOR MIRACLES TO THE VIRGIN'S STATUE WHICH STANDS ABOVE A SPRING OF HEALING WATER.
