  • Description

This week, marchers from 25 countries assembled in the Dutch town of Nijmegen for the annual "Vierdaagse" -- the international marching event which this year drew 15,000 entrants.

The event has been organised since 1909, with breaks only during the two World Wars. Although the marches are not timed, the accent is on teamwork. If one member drops out, the entire team is disqualified.

Entrants march between the scenes of two fierce World War Two battles -- Nijmegen and Arnheim. It takes about four days and the marchers cover up to 30 miles a day.

One of the largest contingents taking part this year is a group of 1,600 British servicemen.
