  • Description

A party of American and Canadian United Nations men - savagely beaten by Congolese at Stanleyville, Aug 27 - arrived by plane at Leopoldville, Aug 26, still clearly suffering from their injuries. Some were stretcher cases, and others were heavily bandaged.

At Leopoldville's N'Djili Airport, United Nations Commander in Chief General Von Horn, and a Sudanese contingent, met the arriving transport planes; the casualties were hurried away to waiting ambulances - to the chagrin of press men and photographers, who protested volubly to General Von Horn; he explained he wanted to spare the injured men any unnecessary fatigue.

Two incidents occurred at Stanleyville, Aug 27. First, United Nations plane crews were attacked on the assumption they were disguised Belgian paratroops; then, Congolese troops entered a hotel used by United Nations men, attacking two Canadians and a Swede they found there.
