  • Description

SIX CUBAN EXILES WERE AMONG EIGHT PEOPLE FINED IN NASSAU YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) FOR BRINGING FIREARMS INTO THE BAHAMAS WITHOUT PERMISSION.

ONE OF THEM WAS MANUEL RAY, THE 39-YEAR-OLD EXILE LEADER WHO DISAPPEARED FROM MIAMI LAST MONTH, SAYING HE WAS RETURNING TO CUBA TO SET UP A BASE FOR REBEL WARFARE AGAINST DR. FIDEL CASTRO'S REGIME.

THE EIGHT MEN - THE OTHER TWO WERE AMERICAN FREELANCE PHOTOGRAPHERS - WERE CAPTURED LAST MONDAY ON THE BAHAMAS ISLAND OF ANGUILLA CAY, A FAVOURITE STAGING POST FOR EXILE RAIDS AGAINST CUBA.

THEY WERE TAKEN OFF BY THE BRITISH DESTROYER "DECOY" AND BROUGHT TO NASSAU, WHERE THEY WERE ALSO CHARGED WITH ILLEGAL ENTRY. EACH WAS FINED FIVE POUNDS ON THE FIREARMS COUNT AND CAUTIONED ON THE OTHER.

STRICT SECURITY MEASURES WERE TAKEN FOR THE COURT HEARING. AFTERWARDS, THE EIGHT MEN WERE TURNED OVER TO IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS.
