    The President of Pakistan, Zultikar Ali Bhutto, launched the 13,500 ton cargo liner "Lalazar" in Karachi on Tuesday (20 March).

    The liner has been built by the Karachi Shipyard for the National Shipping Corporation. She's the third cargo liner to be built along the same lines in Karachi.

    Karachi Shipyard is the only shipbuilding and heavy engineering complex of its type in the Muslim world, the Middle East and North Africa. It was set up in 1956.

    The vessel is 506-feet long with a beam of 64 feet. It can carry 680-thousand cubic feet of grain or 610-thousand cubic feet of bales at 18 knots.

    SYNOPSIS: The Karachi shipyard was crowded on Tuesday for the launching of the 13-and-a-half-thousand ton cargo liner 'Lalazar'. The ship was built for the National Shipping Corporation, and is the third such vessel to be built by the big Karachi Shipyard.

    The launching ceremony was preformed by Pakistan's president, Mr. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was presented, Mr. zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who was presented with garlands of flowers for the occasion. Before the actual launching, Mr. Bhutto was shown around the ship-building complex, and introduced to many of the workers who helped to build the new liner. It's one of the biggest cargo ships to come out of Pakistan, being 506-feet long and 64 feet wide at its broadest beam. Mr. Bhutto made a brief actress at the ceremony, paying tribute to the men who built the ship, and the industries which supported her.

    After his speech, Mr. Bhutto was given a model of the 'Lalazar' by the chairman of the board of directors of the Karachi Shipyard.

    The speeches over, only one thing remained. Mr. Bhutto cut the ribbon, and away she went. The crowd applauded as the ultra modern cargo liner slid gracefully into the water. On her tests, the big liner returned 16 knots. In service she'll carry 680-thousand cubic tons of grain at up to 17 knots.
