  • Description

Thousands of travelling salesmen from Paris took their vehicles to the streets to air their grievances and caused a colossal traffic jam in the capital on Friday (23 May).

About 18,000 of them demonstrated against alleged unfair treatment by the Government, and they were backed by hundreds more who protested in provincial towns.

They wanted the same right of taxi drivers to be allowed to park in the centre of Paris. They claimed that they have been fined up to 400 francs (about GBP40 sterling) for parking offences.

The travelling salesmen also demanded that the Government relax speed limits to enable them to carry out their jobs more efficiently.
