  • Description

Fire, fanned by a wind known as the Harmattan, swept through the Foulani Kouara District near Niamey, Niger on Tuesday (October 27) leaving hundreds homeless in its wake.

It was mid-morning when the fire was discovered. Rapidly it spread as the strong wind carried it from building to building. Villagers and animals fled before the raging flames which destroyed everything in their path.

The local fire engine was soon on the spot, but was not able to cope with the conflagration. The cause of the fire is unknown.

As the flames devoured home after home local residents were virtually helpless. The lone fire engine plus the bucket-chain set in action by residents was no match for the inferno.

The flames stopped only where there was nothing which would burn. A fire crew from nearby Niamey Airport arrived on the scene shortly before the fire burned itself out.

It is believed that one child died in the flames. More than 300 homes were destroyed. Many stunned residents lost not only their homes but also all their belongings.

The toll of livestock was believed to be heavy.
