  • Description

Sweden has agreed to provide substantial foreign aid to South Vietnam to assist the country's Provisional Revolutionary Government in its mammoth task of post-was reconstruction.

At a ceremony in the South Vietnamese capital, Saigon, on Sunday (12 October), Swedish Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Klackenberg -- heading a seven-man delegation -- and South Vietnam's Economics and finance representative, Mr. Nguyen Van Khang formally concluded the air treaty.

Sweden recognised the republic's Provisional Revolutionary government last April after the defeat of the forces backed by the United States and the subsequent fall of the Thieu Government.

Talks followed between Sweden and the country's new Communist government on a wide range of issues - with economic aid the most pressing of all.

The new government is determined to stabilise the economy as quickly as possible. And a major effort has been launched to attract foreign aid and investment.

Much of the Swedish aid will go directly towards assisting the nation's war shattered industries.
